[glow=red,2,300]THE RULES.[/glow]
JUST A FOREWARNING...
We have long rules.
Sorry if that's not your thing. :(
Welcome to IaWBC! Whether you're just lurking or are planning to join, we're glad to have you here.
By joining, you agree to these rules, so you should definitely read them. Yes, they're long, I know. But you are obligated to read all of these rules and understand them.
If you decide you don't need to read them and get in trouble for something later, it is not acceptable for you to claim ignorance—these rules are posted here for you to know about, so do not say that you didn't know it was against the rules. Thanks.
If you have any questions, you can ask a staff member, but please read all of the other information threads and the FAQ first before asking, it might have already been explained.
• You may only have one account. No need to deceive our guests by giving them the impression we are more active than we actually are.
• You can have as many characters as you wish, so long as you keep them active. There will be checks.
• You may only have one character in power, and then when they die you may apply to put another character of yours into a (different) position of power. You can't kill a leader (let's call him Fluffy) off in one gang and then automatically want to make Doofus a gang-leader of another, or even the same one.
Also, make sure to ask a staff member whom holds the power to change your custom title, to alter said title to the name of your one character-in-power, just to make locating that character's player that much easier (if you truly wish to have a more personalized custom title, then request this way: “I would like my custom title to be like this please: My Personal Title / My Character-in-Power.”
Basically, I Like Pie / What'shisface McGee.
• You cannot start roleplaying a character before it is approved by staff.
• You may have characters that are heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual; just about anything—it is after all your character, and creating drama over sexualities is strictly prohibited. You may discuss it, of course, but it must not be an argument, nor may you let it turn in to one at any point in time. It is not too much to ask.
Do not make jokes about race/religion/gender/sexuality, or anything else that is controversial. We won't say no to talking about these things, but be careful, as you could offend someone without meaning to.
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion on things; to each their own, but there will be no homophobia, racism nor sexism on this site outside of in-character roleplay. Absolutely none.
• Stay in character when roleplaying. As humorous as breaking the Fourth Wall can be, it will not happen here.
• Use '(OOC):' when commenting in a post out of character. Make it short and to the point. This really shouldn’t need saying, but it seems like one of the more common problems... stay in-character (IC) at all times. Do not drop out-of-character (OOC) unless absolutely necessary (PM's would be best). If you absolutely must say something OOC in the presence of people who are IC, then enclose the OOC comment in parenthesis and italics.
OOC should stay OOC, and IC should stay IC. If something happens to your character, do not take it personally as an attack from that player to you (you are not your character, not even if said character is based off of your own personality), nor should you use OOC knowledge to further your characters agenda. This is known as metagaming.
Never use OOC information IC in any way. The best example I can give is... just because you can see someone’s name in the post, your character wouldn’t know that character’s name unless someone had told that character in-game.
• Roleplay posts must be a minimum of 200 words (200 words is relative. Quality over quantity!). Detail is absolutely necessary to guarantee your continued membership in this Forum. Do not post ambiguous one-liners. I will put a lot of work into each of my posts and I expect the same from any participant. If this is not the format you are used to then you can either adapt and learn, or resign. I would suggest careful contemplation over each post.
There is no rush. Give others time to react to you. There’s no need to hurry, just relax and enjoy the interaction. People have lives, and won’t necessarily be online every few hours to respond to your posts. Bear in mind that they may be busy, or thinking up a clever way to counter your post, and wait patiently. The courtesy will be appreciated. (Though a polite, nice little, “Hi, do you remember this thread from a few days ago?” occasionally is no invitation for rudeness.)
Be considerate of the role-playing mood of others. If you come into a situation where other characters are already engaged in some roleplay, don’t just leap in with a radically different mood unless you get permission (Either IC or OOC, depending on the situation and whether you have any way to contact them OOC). For example... say two characters are sitting together discussing a recently heroically-deceased comrade and you jump in acting nuts, flailing around like a fool while explaining your hatred for others “stupid enough to risk their lives for anyone but themselves.” Unless this is an agreed upon part of the story, or furthers the overall narrative in some way, you aren’t going to make any friends like this (especially if your actions offend the players behind the characters).
Remember: ICA=ICC. In-character actions equal in-character consequences.
• It is generally considered rude to just up and attack someone in-character out of the blue. If you and your target are not part of some planned combat event, get OOC consent from the player before you attack their character (This can be done IC if you make your meaning clear enough and you can't contact the other players OOC). If there’s no good way to get this permission, at least give them plenty of IC warning that you might attack, and if they seem to approve IC, then go ahead. If they don’t seem willing to fight, or you can’t tell one way or another, it would be best not to attack them to avoid OOC troubles.
When roleplaying combat in-game, remember, no one likes building characters over and over. There’s always some way to avoid death. There are a few reasons for this... either the character that loses has to get “saved at the last minute”, or the character is permanently dead or maimed. It gets very old having people die all the time, no matter how harsh the setting is, or get nearly gutted and dismembered only to show up a few weeks later miraculously healed somehow. So it’s polite to steer events a bit, so that both parties fare evenly, or unevenly to an agreed upon level.
If the combat was a large battle, mention casualties but don’t give names to the dead. Just assume the two sides had several no-name extras along for the fight that can provide convenient dead bodies. If it was a duel, then have it be to first blood or to loss of consciousness... unless of course a character’s true death was agreed upon OOC ahead of time by the character’s player.
Don’t try to be the center of attention all the time. Be polite and share attention with other characters. You aren’t the only one here to have fun, give everyone their turn in the spotlight.
Never include someone else’s character in a post, or written history that didn’t happen or hasn’t happened yet, without letting that player proofread and approve the story before you post it.
• Keep your posts as grammatically correct as possible. At least try at spelling, though this is not as strict. Chatspeak is not permitted.
Please be literate. We do not appreciate illiteracy, because we feel that literacy is very important, even when you are in an Internet forum. Also, please try to use proper sentence structure, keep the spelling and punctuation errors to a bare minimum, and refrain from excessively using any word abbreviations that would be used when performing instant messaging, text messaging, or otherwise.
Examples are using "ty" in place of "thank you", or "ppl" in place of the word "people". This is a roleplaying forum. Following these instructions will make your post easier for us to read, and it also means that you are more likely to draw replies.
• Please always post, in-character, in the size=1 font. It makes text look tidier and less cluttered, thus less annoying to read.
OOC text size is less strict in this respect. Post in any size and font you want OOCly, just be careful that it's easy to read.
• Stay active!
If you joined and a week goes by before you post anything (without an away message beforehand), your account will be deleted.
If you posted a bio but it has not been finished for a week within posting (without an away message beforehand) your bio will be moved to the archives, and you will need to PM a staff member to get it moved back. if you do not reclaim your bio after two weeks, your account will be deleted.
If you have been accepted but neglect to post for a long amount of time (without having posted an away message beforehand) you are at risk of getting your account deleted. Be sure to reply to all activity checks and don't keep people waiting for you to reply for weeks! You should be especially active if you have an important plot position or high ranking character.
• No godmodding/powerplay.
Any action you perform on someone else’s character, no matter what the action might be, should be phrased as an attempt. By making an attempt instead of just doing it outright, you give the character’s player the chance to consent to the action or avoid it if it’s something they’d rather not have happen to their character. Never assume someone will react in a certain way just because you think they should. Always give others the chance to react in their own way, and don’t get upset if the reaction isn’t what you expected.
Respect the game world. Although this site is a story, above all, we expect a certain amount of realism. Governments, armies, and gangs do not appear out of nowhere, nor do they topple for no reason. Every event IC should have a rational explanation within the game world. In other words, no godmodding.
• No character sympathy, either. If one of your characters is in danger, do not send all your other characters to the rescue with no IC reasoning whatsoever. Honestly, what are the odds of that happening? This ties in with godmodding, powerplay and metagaming, also. if you're truly that desperate (i.e. outnumbered or incredibly frightened), just have your character run from or back away from the fight!
It's better than dealing with a consequence for rule violation, merely because you just don't want to admit you can't win.
• Advertise your forum only where allowed: the Advertising & Affiliation board and/or your own signature.
• Do not claim other members' work as your own. Everything on IaWBC is copyrighted to the staff, members, and other proper owners as indicted in our credits thread. DO NOT STEAL ANYTHING. Stealing and plagiarizing are both serious illegal crimes, and if you are caught stealing or plagiarizing, you will be banned and reported.
• No graphic or excessively violent breeding or regular posts.
• No posting on more than one thread in one area, unless no one has posted on said thread in more than a day. Keep in mind days and times: On a gang meeting thread, if the character is not a full-fledged adult when you begin, but in a thread dated after the meeting you mature, you're still an adolescent/kitten in the meeting.
• Respect all the members (even if they've insulted you, in which case alert a staff member via PM). In which it is a staff member giving you problems, contact an admin. No fighting! Period. We are an RPG community, and while not everyone likes everyone, that does not mean it gives you the right to be disrespectful and cause headaches. If someone is harassing you, do not fight with them, no matter how irritating they may be.
Do not bring up your issues with other members publicly on the forum. Again: contact a moderator instead. The forum is not a place to act on your personal vendettas and issues. This includes moronic stuff you've read in the chatbox, disagreements about roleplay, and things of that nature.
The administration reserves the right to jump to any level of punishment they feel is appropriate for the situation. It is also important to note that while administrators are happy to help, acting like an douchebag will only lead to being treated like one.
Characters are required to comply with all bans, lists and rules set forth by the game administration. At times these requirements can be somewhat subjective, and the administration of the game is granted the freedom to make those decisions for purposes of what they feel is the best interest of the game.
• Yes, the two gangs here are based off of the Bloods and the Crips, which originate from California. The game is set in San Diego, California and all the characters are sentient felines, whom, like humans, need some sort of order; so they mimic the most often type they see: streetgangs. More specifically, the Bloods and Crips.
Why did I choose San Diego, or even California at all? Well, because that's where I, Quackfruit, was born and where I grew up, even if I don't live there anymore now. I love that place still, despite the... sluminess of it at times, at least from my point of view. I felt it fitting to dedicate my own roleplaying site to it; my hometown.
• Do your best to make a developed, well-fleshed-out character that does not seem like some generic Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu. Not everyone, even animals, are excessively beautiful or skilled in every single little thing that they do. It's a nice thought, but there is not a soul—not even in fiction—that is positively perfect in any and every way. Keep this in mind.
No two-liner character profiles, either.
Avoid godlike abilities for your characters. Roleplaying isn’t about who can make up the most flawless character, it’s about the personalities of the characters. Any character that is ridiculously powerful or has a perfect personality is going to be fairly boring to write for and will end up being mostly ignored by others.
On another note, I also often see this.
"CRAZY/MENTALLY UNSTABLE/YANDERE SOP." If you want to make a character with some sort of problem, PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH. The term "insanity" is rarely a psychological term in these days. It is a legal term, used to describe where someone knew what they were doing at the time of a crime or not. For example many famous cases of practiced cannibalism were found to not be insane, because they tried to hide their evidence of the act.
They knew what they were doing was wrong, and they tried to hide it and keep it a secret. I'm not going to go overboard describing this, just do the research. It may even help you develop something entirely different then the regular cliche of a crazy character.
• Swearing is fine, but use it only in moderation, not every other word. Do not swear at other members/staff, though, unless the context is obviously light (and even then, tread with caution if you do not know how the people you are speaking to feel about cursing). You are free to use it in moderation IC as well.
• Look at all the other posts before making a new thread in gangland, or anywhere, really. This is to avoid having more than a couple active threads with the same cats in each of them.
• Please do not make a role play thread in Out of Character boards. If I need to explain that, you are already in trouble.
• Once you and your mate have decided to have kittens, you must PM a mod to see if this is okay. If the mod says it is fine, then you have to ask said mod how many kittens your character is going to have. Once the mod decides, you may come up with their names, genders, and basic appearances.
You can only keep one kitten from you litter for yourself if you so wish. The rest most be adopted out to other members.
• Your cat must have a mate in order to be a biological parent (whether this mate is actually involved in the childrens' in-character lives is up to you and the mate's player), unless you PM a mod and said mod gives you the okay to proceed without a mate. This would occur if your cat were starting out as a loner queen or something to that effect.
Not all cats that mate with one another are actually mates. They may have come together just for the sake of reproducing, or perhaps it was just a fling that resulted in an accidental pregnancy... in darker situations, it could have been forced upon the mother. The mates do not necessarily have to be in love.
As soon as your kittens are born, you must create an actual bio for them like the one that you made for your parent cat. It must have all the fields filled out. More can be added and changed as they grow older.
• Bad Roleplay Example:
larry smiled okay thank you roger said larry he walked back to the queens'.
• Good Roleplay Example:
Little Larry smiled fondly at the full-grown cat. "Okay, thank you, Roger," he said. The little kitten turned and walked back to the queens', whom took turns daily to feed both he and his siblings.
Some members post with "bold quotes" and italicized thoughts. Please remember to define speech from action somehow.
Please PM an Admin if you have trouble understanding any of these rules.
